What is vermeil? Vermeil (‘vehr-may’) is the term used for gold plating that is at least 2.5 microns thick over a base metal of sterling silver. It differs from gold-fill and gold plating in that the base metal is always sterling silver, while gold-filled and gold-plated items have a lower quality base metal (brass or copper).
